Tips for amazing make up

from Rebecca O’Sullivan

You may have found your makeup artist through your venue or they may have come recommended from a friend or another member of your bridal party so give them a follow on their social media platforms to keep up to date with their work, every wedding they post is one step closer to yours and can provide you with ideas and inspiration for your own big day.

Plan your trial around the recommended time that your make up artist suggests, when wedding season kicks off (March-November) and then picks back up in December their weekend availability is limited so if you’re offered a Saturday appt Jan-March take it!

Allow enough time for your trial, you may book in for a regular make up appointment but you won’t get the same time offered to you that is booked for a bridal trial make sure you allow yourself enough time for all the chit-chat, make up, tweaks and taking pics. If you plan to wear tan on the wedding day it’s always a good idea to wear it for the trial, it doesn’t have to be a professional spray tan but a hint of colour to give an indication of the colour you intend to be for the wedding as it helps with colour choices etc.

To get the best use of time from the trial I always advise my brides to have a picture or two handy of themselves on a night out/special occasion and another more daily face to show your different styles and personal preferences, your bridal look should not veer too far from either of these as you want your wedding guests and the groom to recognise you, and because you arrive at the trial with no make up you really are a blank canvas and its great to see pics so that you know the general direction the make up look is taking.

Have some Pinterest pics ready for inspiration and have a good idea of general dislikes so that those styles/colours won’t be used. Pick or have an idea of your lip colour shade, lipstick is so personal to the wearer, stick with colours you are used to, don’t go for a red lip unless you are used to wearing it, wedding days aren’t the time for experimenting. Purchase the chosen lip stick choice to have on the day for top ups.

Know your skin type, having the right skin prep done before the makeup is applied is key to how the makeup will last on you, your makeup artist will prep your skin according to what they are told so make sure you give all the info at the time of the trial. If you don’t already know your makeup artist the trial is a great opportunity to get to know them, make sure you give feedback about things you like, don’t be afraid to ask for tweaks or changes and enjoy the trial it’s a fun bit of time out among the wedding planning madness.

Tips for other members of the bridal party

Facials and chemical peels need to be started several months before the wedding… nothing too close and nothing too drastic very close to the big day…

Exfoliation and lots of it before all the tanning commences.

Keep the brows in check…the morning of the wedding is not the time for hair removal it can cause swelling of the skin and unnecessary redness which is tough to cover with makeup.

Keep Zirtek or any other non drowsy anti histamine at the ready for allergies, hay fever and weeping eyes. So many people suffer with weeping eyes.

Elect one person to be in charge of an emergency bag with all kinds of needful to be left at the venue reception for everyone’s use, small things like needle and thread, safety pics, painkillers, plasters etc…the list goes on very handy to have.

Elect another bridesmaid to be in charge of morning prep music, it really adds to the atmosphere on the day.

Make a plan or schedule with your hair and makeup artist. Appoint loose times to each member of the bridal party allowing the last makeup and hair to be finished with an hour to spare, it doesn’t always go to plan but if there’s a loose plan in place everyone knows where they need to be at any given time.

Get your most helpful trusty bridesmaid ready first, they will be free, do some last minute decor, answer phones, direct people and be generally helpful.

Don’t go last for makeup, there’s a certain point in the day when the house gets busy and you don’t need all the distractions, get into the makeup chair halfway through and enjoy your hour of calmness and zen before all the madness kicks in.

Allow more time than you think you need for dressing… everyone always says it’s just a zip or a few buttons but it takes longer than you think to get into that dress, you also want to get used to being in, get photos taken and try sitting in the dress to make sure everything is ok, allow time for underwear/wardrobe malfunctions.

Have boob tape on hand, have a medium size safety pin on hand for hooking the buttons closed.

The morning goes by in the blink of an eye so enjoy all the craic and festivities that the morning brings.

I hope you found this helpful.

Andrea & Eoghan, Phoenix Park Shoot

Andrea & Eoghan Phoenix Park On a warm May Sunday evening I met Andrea and Eoghan for their photoshoot in the Phoenix Park. The sun was shinning and the birds were singing.  A little shy at first and unsure of what to do, Andrea and Eoghan settled into the shoot very quickly. I find it’s best not to overwhelm couples with directions at first and instead observe how they behave with each other. Some are very

First Look

First Look how to get great photographs without pressure Like most things in our global world, the USA seems to be exporting trends all over the world. The First Look is no exception.  For once, it’s a brilliant trend, Trash the Dress was never a favourite of mines but I do love the First Look idea. The tradition is that the groom doesn’t see his bride until the Church ceremony but many couples have a

Engagement Shoot Tips

Why an Engagement Shoot I hear you ask? Firstly it’s a perfect way to get used to being photographed. On your wedding day, your photographer and videographer will be with you 90% of the day, from your preparation until the first dance. Unless you work as a model it’s a little bit unsettling.
